Sunset Hills Celebrates 50 Years

During the course of this blog, I'll be reviewing the different areas of the St. Louis Metro area. This post takes a look at Sunset Hills. This year, Sunset Hills celebrates it's 50th year, having been incorporated in June of 1957. In the 1960s, Sunset Hills acquired an area adjacent to Interstate 44. Sunset Hills is located just south of interstate 44 and just inside 270. City offices were originally located in Sunset Plaza from the 1960's through the 1970's and a new City Hall was built in 1980, at 3939 S. Lindbergh Blvd. The census of 1990 showed that Sunset Hills had 4,915 residents. Sunset Hills is served by both the Lindbergh and Kirkwood School districts and both enjoy the AAA rating of excellence. Private schools in Sunset Hills include the Thomas Jefferson School, a private college preparatory institution serving grade 7 through 12. Sunset Hills offers 2 vocational/technical schools: South County Technical School and Vatterott College. The closet college to Sunset Hills is Meramec Community College located in nearby Kirkwood.

The NEW St. Louis Downtown

St. Louis is not the first city to take downtown revitalization head on, but it is being increasingly recognized throughout the country for it's revitalization efforts downtown. USA Today, NPR and the Wall Street Journal have all recognized the new St. Louis downtown. The new downtown is inspired by rich history and architecture. The transformation efforts are supported by innovative partnerships and driven by a deep commitment to preservation and progress. The new St. Louis downtown has created a new generation of entrepreneurs and community leaders. Momentum is still building downtown. The dramatic growth is still being fueled by real estate developments; some have yet to be developed.

One property I think is particular interesting is Sky House. The $67 million, 22-story condo tower in the heart of the Washington Avenue loft district. The tower is the largest new construction residential building proposed for downtown St. Louis. Sky House is being developed by Chicago-based Metropolitan Development Enterprises. The building will house 166 condos, with prices starting in the mid-$200,000s. One-, two- and three-bedroom units will be available the size will range between 850 and 2,230 square feet. The top three floors will feature 12 penthouse units. The building will have 13,000 square feet of retail space, and 200+ parking spots will be built into the structure. A rooftop recreational area will include a pool, fitness center and dog run. Each of the condo units will feature floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies.
